How to Soundproof a Wall

Blocking or Reducing Sound Transmission Through Walls

The partition – party walls in most family homes are constructed of drywall / sheetrock firmly attached to both sides of a wood or metal stud frame. When sound waves hit one side of the wall it causes the drywall on that side to vibrate. This can be a stereo speaker, a television, a train, a plane, or even your neighbor. The vibrating object creates sound waves in the air. The same vibrations travel through the studwork also channel noise throughout adjacent floors and ceilings. Noise will radiate easily through the structure because there is almost nothing there to cushion and absorb the sound waves. Click here for more information on wall soundproofing.
