How to Soundproof a Door

Soundproofing a Door with QUIET DOOR ™

QuietDoor Most hospitals and educational institutions spend thousands of dollars to buy acoustical doors for areas that need to contain or control noise. New installation of these doors is labor intensive and disruptive to operations. In response to this problem, sound proofing a door has been made easy with American Micro Industries´ new QUIET DOOR ™ products. The three products listed below are designed for loud mechanical and common noise applications, ease of installation and always keeping the budget in mind. There is no need to hire a contractor or expensive labor to install these products. The QUIET DOOR ™ can be retrofitted to an existing door or applied to a new door.
QuietDoor XL QUIET DOOR ™ XL is a very durable sound barrier composite that will reduce noise up to 95%. QUIET DOOR ™ XL can effectively absorb low resonating frequencies by trapping them in the foam and allowing the barrier to block the sound. The composite was designed for easy installation incorporating a peel and stick backing. The XL material can be used for mechanical rooms, music classrooms, recording studios and for home use in workshops, utility and furnace rooms. The QUIET DOOR ™ XL consists of 2lb Mass Loaded Vinyl Barrier and 1 inch Foam with PSA (Peel–and–Stick Backing). QUIET DOOR ™ XL is available in 4 ft. x 8 ft. sheets or can be cut to size by special order.
QuietDoor EC QUIET DOOR ™ EC has the same composition and noise reduction capabilities as the XL but does not have the peel and stick backing. On doors that have multiple windows, openings, latches or handles, the EC material can be applied in pieces using our Super Acoustical Adhesive. The QUIET DOOR ™ EC consists of 2 lb Mass Loaded Vinyl Barrier and 1 inch Foam. QUIET DOOR ™ EC is available in 4 ft. x 8 ft. sheets or can be cut to size by special order.
QuietDoor SM QUIET DOOR ™ SM is the economy grade solution for reducing the noise coming through a door. An interior style hollow core door will not block sound by itself but will transmit noise freely. By applying QUIET DOOR ™ SM to the door and overlapping the gaps around the door, you can expect an 80% to 85% reduction in noise. The QUIET DOOR ™ SM consists of 1/2 lb Mass Loaded Vinyl Barrier and 1/2 inch Foam with PSA (Peel–and–Stick Backing). QUIET DOOR ™ SM is available in 36 inch x 80 inch sheets and custom sizes by special order.

Installation of QUIET DOOR ™:

Make sure the QUIET DOOR ™ soundproofing composite is well fitted around the door. The proper way to size the material is to cut the QUIET DOOR ™ one inch larger than the door. This will cover the gaps or crevices and not allow sound to migrate through.

For the bottom of the door, cut as close to floor as feasible for door operation.

For around door knobs and locks, cut the QUIET DOOR ™ as close to the hardware as possible.

Keep in mind that a 1/8 inch opening around all four sides of a door will transmit 15% of the sound resulting in poor acoustical performance.
