Soundproofing a Boat

Marine Grade Soundproofing Products for Marine Applications

Soundproofing is the most common issue heard from owners and operators of boats with in-board engines, where all of the unwanted noise is coming from the engine compartment. Noise from the very popular diesel engines is sometimes unbearable. The material typically used on the inside surfaces of engine compartments does little or nothing to reduce noise transmission from the compartment. A new approach to the problem is required.

American Micro Industries, Inc. has developed four new products designed to significantly reduce the transmission of noise from the engine compartment. In addition to the actual sound proofing products, we also offer installation materials and tools. Brief descriptions and installation instructions for these products follow.

1.    Marine Grade ULTRA BARRIER /PSA™ – This marine grade sound proofing composite is one of our premium products. When properly installed, this material will effectively eliminate 90% of the noise coming from the engine compartment. Marine Grade ULTRA BARRIER /PSA™ is composed of an open-cell foam base and a high density barrier where the noise energy is absorbed. Marine Grade ULTRA BARRIER /PSA™ has a peel and stick, pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) backing on the exposed side of the foam for ease of installation.

2.    Marine Grade ULTRA BARRIER ™ – This marine grade sound proofing composite is the same premium grade material as described above, except that there is no PSA on the foam to facilitate installation. Instead, Marine Grade ULTRA BARRIER ™ requires our aggressive Super Acoustic Adhesive or our Hanger Kits for installation.

Installing Marine Grade ULTRA BARRIER/PSA™ and ULTRA BARRIER ™

Installing either the Marine Grade ULTRA BARRIER /PSA™ or ULTRA BARRIER ™ composites requires cutting the 1 1/4 inch thick x 4 ft. x 8 ft. sheets into convenient sizes to cover the bulkheads and overhead in your boat's engine compartment. This material can easily be cut with heavy duty scissors or tin snips. For the peel and stick Marine Grade ULTRA BARRIER /PSA™, simply peel the liner from the back of each cut to size piece, one at a time. Align each piece on the bulkhead or overhead, then press into place. Butt the pieces against each other and fill in gaps with our Acoustic Sealant.

For the plain backed Marine Grade ULTRA BARRIER™, cut into convenient sizes as above, apply our Super Acoustic Adhesive to the foam side of the composite, align and press into place. Press and hold until it is obvious that the piece has adhered to the interior engine room surface. Again, butt the pieces against each other and fill in the gaps with our Acoustical Sealant. Don't forget the inside surface of the hatch cover.

For those who want to mechanically fasten the material to the bulkheads, we offer an economical, easy to use, three–part hanger to be placed on 12 to 18 inch centers with Adhesive Pads. Push the composite over the sharp pins, push the holding plates onto the pins, cut the pins to length, and push the protective caps onto the exposed end of the pin. After installation of the Marine Grade ULTRA BARRIER ™, fill the cracks between the pieces and the compartment boundaries with our Acoustic Sealant, then seal the seams with our 3 inch wide BARRIER TAPE /PSA™. Cover as much surface as possible with Marine Grade ULTRA BARRIER ™.

3.    Marine Grade ECONO BARRIER /PSA™ – This marine grade material is a more economical barrier that will also effectively reduce the noise transmission from an engine compartment on a boat by 70% when properly installed. Marine Grade ECONO BARRIER /PSA™ is also a very dense noise barrier that is heat resistant to 180°F and is resistant to harsh chemicals, including petroleum products. Marine Grade ECONO BARRIER /PSA™ is available in 4 ft. x 8 ft. sheets with a peel and stick backing (PSA) for easy installation.

4.    Marine Grade ECONO BARRIER ™ – This noise barrier is the same as the material above except that there is no backing (no PSA). Our Super Acoustic Adhesive or Hanger Kits are required to install this ECONO BARRIER ™ (no PSA).

Installing ECONO BARRIER /PSA™ and ECONO BARRIER ™

Both types of ECONO BARRIER ™ can easily be cut into convenient sizes with a sharp utility knife, heavy duty scissors or Snips, to fit on all surfaces inside the engine compartment, except the deck. As above, fill all gaps with our Acoustical Sealant, then cover the seams with our 3 inch wide BARRIER TAPE /PSA™ (peel-and-stick backing).

Marine Grade BARRIER TAPE /PSA™ – This tape is used to cover the seams of our sound barrier products and comes in conveniently sized rolls 1/16 inch thick x 3 inch x 6 ft. for easy handling in tight areas. It has a convenient peel-and-stick backing and excellent resistence to chemicals and petroleum products.
